The Science of Powering Devices With Ambient Light

Solar energy harvesting is the application of photovoltaic technology to capture ambient illumination and convert into electrical energy. Our goal is to advance solar energy harvesting as provide a means to eliminate reliance on batteries for consumer electronics. The problem with batteries is that the amount of energy they store is finite and a product can only last so long on that battery until it either needs to be replaced or recharged.

Ambient’s PV cell technology captures ambient illumination, converts it to electrical energy, and delivers power every day through the lifetime of the product.

Not only does ambient illumination provides a consistent source of power that can be used either to replace batteries entirely or extend battery life, it also provides the capacity to enable entirely new applications — such as advancing a security sensor to a security sensor with machine learning involved — or to enable new features, such as person detection in a video doorbell.
